Frequently asked questions

How do I enter a date before Christ?

Open the event and turn on Before birth of Christ under Date. The timeline then shows the year with B.C., for example 753 B.C.

How do I show a war or an empire that lasted years?

Turn on Period in the event and set an end date. The event is drawn as a bar from its start to its end.

Can I show only the year instead of the full date?

Yes. Turn on Show only the year in the timeline in the event editor.

What does the To Scale layout do?

It places every event by its real distance in years, so long gaps look long and close events sit close together. Year markers adjust from every year to every 1,000 years as you zoom. Use the overview map to jump along the timeline and search to find an event.

How do I present my timeline to the class?

Tap the Play button. Each event appears as a full-screen slide, and the arrows move to the previous or next event.

How does the order quiz work?

The quiz shuffles the events of your timeline. Drag them into order from the oldest to the most recent, then check your answer. You’ll see a score such as 4 of 8 in the right order, with a checkmark next to each event that’s in place. Move the others between them to fix the timeline, or play again.

How do I change the background?

Open Background from the toolbar and choose one of the 19 history backgrounds. On devices that support Image Playground, you can also describe a background and create your own.

Why don’t I see Apple Intelligence suggestions or Describe a background?

Both need a device that supports Apple Intelligence, with Apple Intelligence turned on in Settings. Everything else in the app works on all supported devices.

How do I hand in my timeline?

Use the Share button to export it as an image or as a multi-page PDF. If your class uses Schoolwork, you can hand in your timeline as an assignment.

Where are my timelines saved?

Each timeline is a document. You’ll find it under Recents, Shared and Browse on the start screen, saved on your device or in iCloud Drive, depending on where you chose to keep it.

Why does the timeline run from top to bottom on my iPhone?

When you hold your iPhone upright, the timeline runs vertically so the events are easier to read on a narrow screen.

Which devices can I use?

ExplainTime EDU works on iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple Vision Pro.
