Frequently asked questions

When does the Word of the Day change?

A new saying appears every day at midnight. You can browse all the sayings, by theme, in the Story tab under Sayings.

I don't get the morning reminder.

Check that the reminder is turned on in the app's Settings, and that notifications are allowed for Don Bosco in the iOS Settings app under Notifications. Focus modes can also hold notifications back.

How do I add the widget?

Touch and hold an empty area of your Home Screen or Lock Screen, tap Edit, then Add Widget, and search for Don Bosco. To choose between all sayings, one theme or only your favorites, touch and hold the widget and tap Edit Widget.

How do I change my name?

Open Settings in the app and edit the name under You. Leave it empty if you'd rather not be greeted by name.

My favorites or intentions aren't showing on my other device.

They sync through iCloud. Check that both devices are signed in to the same Apple Account and that iCloud is turned on for Don Bosco in Settings. Syncing can take a few minutes after you open the app.

Who can read my prayer intentions?

Only you. Intentions are stored on your devices and end-to-end encrypted in your own iCloud. The developer has no way to see them.

How do I add my oratory's or parish's calendar?

Ask your oratory or parish for its calendar subscription link (it starts with https:// or webcal://, and often ends in .ics). Paste it in the app's Settings under Your oratory. Events for the coming week appear in This week on the Home screen. Google Calendar, iCloud and Outlook all offer a public or shared calendar link.

The read-aloud voice sounds robotic.

The app uses the voices built into iOS. For a more natural voice, download an Enhanced or Premium voice in the iOS Settings app under Accessibility, Read & Speak (Spoken Content on earlier versions), Voices.

Why don't I see Ask Don Bosco?

Ask Don Bosco is experimental and runs entirely on your device, so it needs a device that supports Apple Intelligence, with Apple Intelligence turned on in Settings. Its answers are short and based on the app's own content, and they can occasionally be imprecise.

Can I use the app with Siri?

Yes. Say "Get today's word from Don Bosco", "Pray with Don Bosco" or "Pray the Holy Rosary with Don Bosco". You'll also find the app's actions in the Shortcuts app, and sayings, dreams and prayers in Spotlight search.

Which languages are available?

English, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Polish and French. The app follows your device language. To choose a different one just for this app, open the iOS Settings app, go to Apps, Don Bosco, Language.

Where do the sayings come from?

From Don Bosco's writings and from sayings of his handed down by the Salesian Family, along with a few from his saints. Where a source is well documented, it's shown under the saying. Many popular sayings are paraphrases passed on orally, so if you know a better source or spot an error, please write.
